COURSE PLATFORM & CONTENT DELIVERY FORMAT:

  • Hosted on the Thinkific learning platform, this course uses a distance learning, independent, on-demand format.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

  • Dr. Marnell will teach the basics of sensory processing and will highlight identifiable signs of sensory sensitivity. Learners will understand current research in the field of occupational therapy which shows the prevalence of sensory sensitivity in autism. The evidence-based benefits of employing proactive sensory supports to cultivate emotional regulation in autistic children and teens will be presented, along with several concrete strategies for learners to employ in a students' classrooms and at home.

  • This course is targeted to occupational therapy practitioners and set at an introductory learning level.           No prerequisite coursework is required.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1- Identify the 5 external and 3 internal sensory systems that may be over-responsive in autistic individuals.

2- List 5 sensor y supports that can be incorporated in a classroom or at home in order to support sensory-sensitive students.

TIME ORDERED AGENDA:

​1- Understand the basic process of sensory processing (10 min)

2- Identify when an autistic student is over-responsive (5 min)

3- Learn proactive supports for sensory sensitivity (15 min)

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:

​This professional development activity teaching methods include lecture, a PowerPoint presentation, informational and instructional graphics, and a single case study.

  • Cancellation by the PD provider, Kids Master Skills, will entitle all registered learners to receive a full course refund within 3 days of written notice.

  • Learners may cancel registration prior to starting the second course module on any Kids Master Skills' PD course and will be eligible for a full refund, which will be sent within 3 days.

AOTA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Contact Hours:

  • At this time, Kids Master Skills' PD activities are not approved for AOTA CEUs or Contact Hours.

  • If approval is granted and if an individual PD course is also approved, then this provider's courses which are over 60 minutes of PD time will be eligible for AOTA CEUs and Contact Hours.

  • This course, "Helping Sensory Sensitive Kids is not eligible for AOTA CEUs.

Professional Development Activity Completion Requirements:

In order to receive a certificate of completion, please follow these instructions:

  1. Watch the thirty-minute professional development course video in its entirety.

  2. Complete the two-question quiz at the end of the course and achieve a passing score of 80%. Multiple passing attempts are permitted.
